Notifications & Mobile Use
Use Familiar well on phones and tablets, understand notification behavior, and get the most out of installable app and offline-friendly features.
Best for
Mobile is ideal for quick updates and on-the-go coordination.
Notifications depend on browser permissions and device behavior.
The app is designed to work well as a PWA when installed properly.
In this guide
Section 01
What mobile is best for
You can do almost everything on mobile, but the experience is strongest when you use it for quick, high-frequency updates rather than long setup sessions.
- Checking chores quickly while moving around the house.
- Editing the shopping list in real time during a store trip.
- Reviewing notes, reminders, and notifications away from a desktop.
Section 02
How notifications behave
Notifications help Familiar stay useful even when no one is actively staring at the app. Whether they appear reliably depends on browser permissions, background restrictions, and whether your device allows the installed app to stay current.
- Allow browser notifications when prompted if you want alerts.
- Check device-level notification settings if alerts stop appearing.
- Use direct app checks as a fallback for critical workflows.
Section 03
Installing Familiar as a PWA
- 1Open Familiar in your supported mobile or desktop browser.
- 2Use the browser install or “Add to Home Screen” option.
- 3Launch the installed version and confirm it signs in correctly.
- 4If the site recently changed domains or auth settings, reinstall so the latest manifest and service worker are used.
After domain changes
If the app used to live on another domain, old installed versions may keep stale state. Remove the old install and add the current domain again.
Section 04
Offline behavior and syncing later
Offline support helps with continuity, but it does not mean every action becomes instantly authoritative without internet. If something matters urgently, confirm it after reconnecting.
- Some screens remain accessible when the network is unstable.
- Fresh updates may wait until the connection returns.
- If a change seems missing, reopen the feature once the device is online again.

Account & Sign-In
Use email or Google sign-in, understand verification and password recovery, and make switching between devices less painful.
Shopping Lists
Plan shopping collaboratively, use optional prices and priorities, and understand totals, PDF export, and what belongs in the active list versus history.
Troubleshooting
Work through the most common end-user issues methodically: sign-in problems, stale mobile installs, missing updates, export problems, and family-access confusion.
