How invite links work

An invite link is the cleanest way to bring someone into a family without sharing credentials or asking them to guess where they belong after sign-up. The recipient should open the link, sign in or create their own account, and land in the correct family context when the flow finishes.

  • Send the link directly to the person who should join.
  • Ask them to use their own account, not a shared household login.
  • Treat invite links as a guided entry path, not as a general family URL to forward around casually.

The cleanest way to accept an invite

  1. 1Open the invite on the device where you plan to complete sign-in.
  2. 2Stay in the same browser window for the whole flow if possible.
  3. 3Sign in with the account you actually want tied to the family.
  4. 4Wait for the app to finish the handoff instead of opening extra tabs halfway through.
  5. 5Confirm the family appears correctly before closing the browser.

One-account rule

If a person accidentally joins with the wrong account first, the family may look missing later when they sign in with a different one. Check the account identity before assuming the invite is broken.

If the link is expired or the wrong account was used

These are the two most common invite problems. In both cases, the fastest recovery is usually to stop retrying the old flow and start fresh with a clean invite or the correct account.

  • Ask an admin to send a fresh invite if the link no longer works.
  • Log out and restart with the correct account if the wrong identity was used.
  • Close stale tabs so you are not mixing a new invite with an old browser state.
  • If mobile still behaves oddly, retry in Safari or Chrome directly instead of an in-app browser.

Joining on mobile without getting stuck

Mobile is convenient for joining, but it is less forgiving when a login flow jumps through email, social auth, or in-app browsers. A little discipline makes the process much smoother.

  • Open the invite in your default browser, not inside chat or email if you can avoid it.
  • Finish sign-in in the same browser session that opened the invite.
  • If the family does not appear afterward, reopen the invite or sign out and retry once instead of tapping around randomly.

What admins should check after someone joins

  • Confirm the new person shows up in the family member list.
  • Confirm they have the right role before they begin using chores or settings.
  • Ask them to open one real feature, such as Shopping or Notes, to verify access immediately.
  • Remove duplicate or mistaken memberships if the person joined with the wrong account first.
